MacEwen's Maui

Location: Hawaii

Humpback Whale #2405, known as MacEwen’s Maui, was first observed in 1994 as part of a group of four whales. MacEwen’s Maui was sighted again in 1995, and in 2020 was photographed by a community scientist who donated the photo to the PWF Research team. The most recent sighting of MacEwen’s Maui was on January 21, 2020, when the whale was sighted by PWF researchers. During that encounter, the team was able to collect body condition of the animals using a drone, which will help us to quantify the energetics costs of the Hawai‘i-Alaska migration.
